Bono. Bono is Troy's best friend and sidekick. It's been that way ever since they first met as young men in prison. These two pals work together as garbage men and hang out, sipping on gin every Friday night. The Friday-night drinking sessions we see make it pretty clear that Bono is second in command of the pair.

Gabriel is the brother to Troy. As Bono says, “Some people build fences to keep people out…and other people build fences to keep people in.” This is why Rose wants the fence to be built. When faced with Troy’s infidelity she gets only a cursory, self-serving response from Troy.

Jim Bono is Troy's friend, coworker, and drinking partner. The two men, who met in prison, gather each Friday night after work to drink, share stories, and commiserate.

Several scenes of the play revolve around Troy and Bono's conversations in Troy's backyard while drinking on Friday nights. Troy met Bono while in prison. Bono both remembers Troy's past and serves as a moral compass for Troy in his relationship with his wife, Rose. Bono is Troy's best friend for over 30 years they met in jail, Bono kind of agrees with Troy's nonsense; bono looks up to Troy. Bono has a wife Lucille that he mentions often and you can tell that he loves her. Troy Maxson, throughout Fences, is the source of an inability to trust to those surrounding him.

Troy stubbornly responds that he does not need anyone to tell him that his wife loves him. “Some people build fences to keep people out, and other people build fences to keep people in,” offers the sage Bono one afternoon during his usual bonhomie with fellow refuse collector Troy Maxson. The seemingly minor line encompasses the entire leitmotif of August Wilson’s play, Fences. As Bono says, “Some people build fences to keep people out… And other people build fences to keep people in” (Wilson, Fences Act II, Scene i). Fences, for Wilson, represent unmet ambitions, the achievement of property ownership, Troy’s commitment to marriage, his hard-won right to exert authority, Rose’s attempt to acquire spiritual protection, and an effort to preserve family unity. In this sense, there is a certain degree of irony about the situation, as the fence built by Troy surrounds his own home, but the only people he will allow to get close to him are Bono and Alberta, who are not part of his household.

Ever since Bono observed Troy’s decision to take Rose’s hand in marriage, Bono admired his sensibility and wisdom. Troy, though attractive to many women, chose to commit himself to Rose, and this signaled to Bono that he was a man worth following: that Troy would lead Bono somewhere prosperous in life.
