Böcklin produced several different versions of the mysterious painting between 1880 and 1886. All versions of Isle of the Dead depict a desolate and rocky islet seen across an expanse of dark water. Rachmaninoff uses a recurring figure in 5/8 time to depict what may be the rowing of the oarsman or the movement of the water, and as in several other of his works, quotes the Dies Irae plainchant, an allusion to death. It begins with a slow and mournful phrase in the harps with accompaniment in muted strings and kettle drums, followed by a figure in the cellos, which imitates the wash of the water as it breaks upon the strand of the Isle of Death.

Isle of the Dead (Russian: Остров мёртвых), Op. 29, is a symphonic poem composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff, written in the key of A minor. He concluded the composition while staying in Dresden in 1908. It is considered a classic example of Russian late- Romanticism of the beginning of the 20th century.

Rachmaninov's piece is elegiac, shadowy and often dramatic, artfully incorporating the Gregorian Dies Irae. It's highly intense music which leads itself to theatrical interpretations. Yet Vladimir Jurowski's live recording with the London Philharmonic Orchestra takes a different approach: there's no melodrama here, only tension and energy arising from a sensitive and subtle approach.
